| Žilina University (ŽU) was established on 1 October 1953. At present the university has seven faculties and seven institutes, where 700 university teachers are working and a total of approximately 10,000 students are enrolled in all the university’s various study programmes. Since 2000 the University has been a member of the European Universities Association (EUA).
The Faculty of Science (staff of over 100) provides bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a wide range of study programmes, some of which are teacher training programmes; the others are applied mathematics, information technology, mediamatics. Teacher trainees take two subjects and most of them choose English as one of them. If interested, they can choose CLIL methodology as one of their optional subjects so that they are prepared to teach their second subjects at CLIL schools. The faculty provides pre-service and in-service programmes, as well as tutoring and counselling services, and co-operates with bilingual secondary schools and methodological centres in Slovakia. Because at present there are 5 CLIL schools in the region, we are going to ask for the accreditation of a post-graduate CLIL course aimed at in-service teachers who already teach at CLIL schools, however, need some support in language methodology. The course is planned to start in September 2009.
